Tis Toad Season

I am so thankful to have so many choices of places to explore within the city that are natural. We have woods, streams, ponds, gardens, to observe and interact with. Today we enjoyed the arboretum with friends, following a path that led us through a marshy area, some woods, a field and manicured gardens (all in two hours). One of our friends spotted a toad that was very well camflouged into the leafs and mud. With a group effort and lots of muddy fingers and toads we were able to catch, hold and feel the beautiful creature. It is always such an exciting moment.
The kids are becoming so confident in their knowledge of nature. Its so great to see their comfort in sharing their knowledge with adults. They do not assume an adult knows more than them because they are older. People all know different things, that knowing isn't because of age but because of life experience. My kids have gathered lots of information about natural habits and really enjoy sharing this. I find it very telling that they also feel most comfortable around adults who listen (really listen) to what they say and value their contribution. These adults are friends; also not determined by age.
