In the aftermath of a devastating fire in Yellowstone National Park, forest rangers went in to assess the damage. The land had been totally decimated. Mounds of ash covered the forest ground; charred, skeletal trees barely stood; and the air was thick with smoke.
As a forest ranger solemnly embraced the awe-inspiring power of nature to both create and destroy, he saw a burnt bird leaning against a charred tree amidst the rubble. Hidden beneath a fallen branch of a tree, the bird's fragile body had been scorched by the rampant fire and smoke. Swept by empathy, the forest ranger had an impulsive desire to bury the innocent creature.
When the forest ranger picked up the bird, it took a moment for him to realize the sanctity of what he saw beneath the bird's wings. Three little chicks came prancing out from under their mother's wings- unaware of the death and desolation that surrounded them. They pecked at each other, chirped their little tunes and danced around each other.
Their mother, in an effort to protect her chicks from what she instinctively knew would be a life-threatening fire, had taken them to a protective space and covered them with her wings. As the fires raged around her, the mother bird stood-stoic, unmoving, and steadfast. It would have been easy for the mother bird to fly away to safety, but instead she did not move. There was no sacrifice too great to protect her little babies.
