The Ultimate Amphibian

Despite it being another very wet day, we decided to buck up and head over to the provincial park near by for one of their kids nature programs. I think we were the only locals who came out, everyone else appeared to be campers seeking some solace from the rain (and cooped kids). The focus was amphibians, with a character leopard frog in attendance. There was a discussion on the different body parts of a frog, the life cycle of an amphibian (I had no idea salamanders have a tadpole stage), local frogs, toads and salamanders were identified. There were a few games, which were enjoyed, the hit being the ultimate amphibian.

The game is based on rock, paper, scissors, which was a hit right across the age groups. Each person needs to pass through each of the basic life stages of an amphibian; egg, tadpole, adult and then ultimate amphibian (as you have been one of the lucky few to pass through all these stages without falling prey). To pass through the stages (each stage having its own hand signal), you challenge other people to a game of rock, paper, scissors, whomever wins moves on to the next life stage. You must challenge others in the same life stage as yourself, once you are an ultimate amphibian you can challenge anyone, trying to help others reach the final stage. Simply, fun.

While we all enjoyed ourselves, we were wishing there was more of a hands on component to the program. We did have our own search around, and at home went down to the pond which gave us that. The programs look interesting, we are hoping with our seasons pass to attend quite a few.
