What I have learned from frog catching

The Frog

Be kind and tender to the Frig,
And do not call him names,
as "Slimy skin," or "Polly-wog,"
Or likewise "Ugly James,"
Or "Gap-a-grin," or "Toad-gone-wrong",
Or "Billy Bandy-knees":

That frog is justly sensitive
To epithets like these.
No animal will more repay
A treatment kind and fair;
At least so lonely people say
Who keep a frog (and, by the way,
They are extremely rare).

If ever I thought my children lacked in patience, concentration, being able to be quiet (even silent) for long periods of time, staying with one task through to the end despite interruptions or distractions, I have been greatly mistaken. I just need to take them to search for frogs to be reminded of the skills they have. All three of them looked among the reeds and thick plants quietly, with full focus on finding frogs. Even with a hole in one net, extremely fast frogs and slippery mud, they never waned in their determination. The end result was rewarding, all their hard work was worth it for them. There is nothing like holding a big, slimy, green frog.

An Old Silent Pond

An old silent pond...
A frog jumps into the pond,
Splash! Silence again.
